While registering for JAMB, you will be given the option to select your mode of admission, which can either be UTME or Direct Entry (DE). If you pick UTME, it means you are applying for admission into first year (100 level), while if you pick DE, it means you are applying for admission into second year (200 level).
In the long run, some candidates who registered for JAMB might want to switch their mode of admission from UTME to Direct Entry due to one reason or another. To achieve this, such a candidate will have to do what we call JAMB UTME to DE conversion.
This conversion is simply the process of changing your mode of admission from UTME to Direct Entry (DE). It gives candidates who initially picked UTME the opportunity to still do Direct Entry (DE). Candidates who have successfully converted from UTME to Direct Entry are called “Conversation Candidates.”.
Are you interested in converting your UTME to Direct Entry? If yes, then you are in the right place because in today’s article, I will be telling you how to go about it. Not just that, I will also be telling you the next thing to be done after this conversion and more.
I will start by listing the eligibility criterias for JAMB UTME to Direct Entry conversion. Before you can be able to do this conversion, you must be able to meet up with the eligibility criterias. And what exactly are these criterias? Let’s find out.
Eligibility Criterias for JAMB UTME to Direct Entry (DE) Conversion
To be able to convert from UTME to DE,
- You must have registered for that year’s UTME (2025) and also sat for the exam.
- You must have done A’Level (JUPEB, IJMB, etc.) or a diploma (ND/HND/OND/NCE, etc.).
If you meet up with the eligibility criterias listed above, then you can do this conversion. Also, there are some important documents you will need to have before you can be able to do this conversion. And what exactly are the documents? Let’s find out also.
Documents Needed for JAMB UTME to Direct Entry (DE) Conversion
The documents needed for those who will be using A Level (JUPEB, IJMB e.t.c) are different from those who will be using Diploma (ND/HND/NCE/OND e.t.c). So to make things understandable, I will be listing them separately.
A’Level
- UTME Result Printout
- O’Level Result Printout
- A’level Result Printout (Not Photocopy)
- School Admission Letter
Diploma
- UTME Result Printout
- O’Level Results Printout
- Diploma (ND/OND/NCE/HND etc.) Transcript
- JAMB Admission Letter
If you will be using a diploma and you don’t have a JAMB admission letter, probably because your admission wasn’t through JAMB, you will need to do regularisation. This regularisation will help register your admission with JAMB, and after successfully completing it, you will be given a JAMB admission letter.
Though there is other information you will be asked for at the point of conversion, but make sure you have those core documents listed above before you proceed. Now how do you convert from UTME to Direct Entry? Let’s find out.
How To Convert From JAMB UTME To Direct Entry (DE) 2025/2026?
To convert from UTME to Direct Entry, kindly follow the steps below.
- Visit any JAMB state office close to you. Each state has a JAMB office situated there, so kindly locate the one in the state where you are currently residing. If you are finding it hard to locate it, kindly visit HERE, where JAMB has listed the locations of all their offices in each of the 36 states in Nigeria.
- When you get there, tell them you want to do a conversion from UTME to DE, and then they will take it up from there. Of course they will ask you for all those important documents listed above and some other details, so make sure you go along with all of them.
- After the whole process is done, you will be given a DE slip.
JAMB UTME to DE Conversion Price
You aren’t required to pay any money to convert from UTME to Direct Entry (DE). This simply means conversion is free.
When Is JAMB UTME To Direct Entry Starting (2025/2026)?
The JAMB UTME to Direct Entry conversion has started already. JAMB opened the portal on the 7th of August, 2025.
Now that conversion has commenced already, there are two things you need to know after you have done yours successfully. They include;
- You need to know what happens after conversion.
- You need to know what to do after conversion.
As always, we’ve got you covered, so I will be telling you everything.
1 What Happens After Conversion?
Basically, there are two things that will happen after conversion. They include;
- Your Registration Number Will Change
After conversion, your registration number will change. Usually, the letter “U” will be added at the end of the registration number.
- There Will Be Changes On Your JAMB Caps
You will also notice other little changes on your JAMB caps after conversion. One of those changes is the appearance of the “NIPED Status,” which was not there until you converted.
- It Will Reflect On Your School Portal
After conversion, it will also reflect on your school portal. Though it usually takes time but it’s expected to reflect on your school portal before their post-UTME registration ends. When it has reflected, you will be able to access their portal and also register for their post-UTME.
2 What To Do After Conversion?
There are some certain things you need to do after successfully converting from UTME to Direct Entry (DE).
- Submitting Your Slip to Your Institution
Most institutions usually ask their direct entry applicants to submit their DE slip at some point. So after successfully converting from UTME to Direct Entry, kindly do your own research to know if your school requires their DE applicants to submit their DE slip. If they request it, kindly visit your school to submit yours or follow the process stated by them.
- Register for Your School Direct Entry Screening
All institutions usually conduct a screening exercise, which is mostly online, for their DE applicants. Unlike UTME applicants that do post-UTME exams, direct entry applicants will be doing screening only. So after conversion, make sure you watch out for when your school will open their portal for direct entry screening so you can register because without participating in this screening, you are automatically not eligible for admission.
Can I Do JAMB UTME To Direct Entry In A Cafe?
NO, you can’t do a conversion from UTME to Direct Entry at a cyber cafe. Only JAMB offices are authorised to assist students in doing this conversion.
Can I Do a Conversion From UTME To Direct Entry Without Writing The Exam?
NO, you can’t do a conversion from UTME to DE without sitting for the exam. As stated earlier, one of the eligibility criteria for this conversion is that you must have written the UTME for this year.
Will I Still Be Offered Admission Through UTME After Conversion to Direct Entry?
NO, you won’t. Candidates can only pick one mode of admission, which can either be through UTME or Direct Entry (DE), and conversion from UTME to DE doesn’t mean you will still be offered admission through UTME. Once you have converted, your full focus will be on the DE mode of admission, as you don’t have any business with UTME again.
Can I Switch Back to UTME After Doing Conversion?
NO, you can’t switch back to UTME after conversion from UTME to Direct Entry (DE). So if you have successfully converted, your new mode of admission is Direct Entry, and there is no turning back.
Can I Use Awaiting Results for Conversion?
NO, you cannot use awaiting results for conversion. Before you can be able to convert from UTME to DE, all your important documents as stated above must be readily available, including your results, because without them, you won’t be allowed to proceed.
Conclusion
In conclusion, conversion is just a way of switching your mode of admission, and this can be done by visiting any JAMB office close to you with the required documents. Do you have any other questions on conversion? If yes, then kindly drop them in the comment section below, and we will happily respond to you in the best way we can. Thanks for reading this article.

I have written JAMB and IJMB examination this year 2025 but the ijmb result cannot meet up with unilorin post UTME since the ijmb result is not yet out. That simply means I can’t convert to DE since one of the criteria is not yet ready. But the questions are,
1. A candidate who has initially indicated the mode of entry to DE during jamb registration do not need to do conversion?
2. Is it a must for DE aspiring candidate that did IJMB to register jamb that year in other to obtain post UTME form?
Thank you for your response.
1. Yes. Conversion is only meant for candidates who initially picked UTME as their mode of admission but want to switch later on.
2. Writing UTME is compulsory for all DE candidates.
Will I go for nysc
Thank you for your response. Yes, only if you meet up with the requirements.
I have done my UTME conversion, but I am unable to apply for my school’s post-UTME because the new reg number is a 15-digit number while my school requires a reg number equal to a 14-digit number.
Please how do I go about it?
Thank you for your response. Are you the only aspirants facing this issue? We will patiently be waiting for your response.
I don’t know of any other person.
Thank you for your response. You have to check around, so as to be sure if it’s actually an issue or you are the one making mistake.
As I already done my diploma in health promotion and education with upper credit me I converted my jamb to DE and apply for Bsc public health. And our school didn’t accredited with jamb, school I attend in my diploma certificate.

I have written JAMB and IJMB examination this year 2025 but I am afraid of IJMB result meeting up with Unilorin admission this year. What do you think? If we write Unilorin post UTME before the conversation will conversation be still possible?
Thank you for your response. Once post utme is written, they won’t accept whatever sort of conversation or change of institution to their school again for that year.
You will have to convert and do change of institution alongside to a new school that is yet to conduct post utme/DE screening.
