The NYSC is an important scheme in Nigeria compulsory for all youth graduates from an accredited institution who aren’t less than 30 years old as of the time of graduation. And like we all know, the aim of this scheme is to promote national unity in the country.
Prospective corp members who are eligible are usually posted randomly to different states to carry out their 1 year service to the country. During that 1 year of service, corp members are usually paid a certain amount of money (known as allowance) monthly to aid them throughout their service year. This is also known as the federal government allowance.
However, lucky corp members are also given additional stipends monthly by the state where they are posted to serve, which is known as state allowance. So what exactly is this state allowance all about? Let’s find out.
What Is State Allowance?
State allowance is an additional payment a corp member receives from a particular state where he or she was posted to. It is totally different from the federal government allowance (₦77,000) paid to corp members.
Unlike the federal government allowance that’s fixed at ₦77,000, the state allowance is not fixed, as it depends on the state where you were posted to serve. However, the truth is that not all states pay their corp members state allowance.
And just to enjoy both the federal and state allowance benefits, corp members are always on the lookout for states that pay some monthly allowances to corps members. At least summing it up with the federal government allowance, one will be able to get something tangible every month end.

Recently, many corp members are complaining about not being paid by a state, whereas others tend to receive payments from the said state. If you are serving in a potential state that tends to pay corps members their state allowance and you’ve not received any payments, reasons might be:
- Relocation: The said state might not be your state of deployment. Most states don’t usually pay corp members who redeployed from their initial state to another state. Hence, they might not receive any monthly payment from the said state.
- Failure To Register: Most corps members usually tend to make the mistake of not registering for the state government’s allowance. In some states, it is essential to submit your documents at the NYSC state secretariat in your place of deployment or contact your local government inspector (LGI) for guidance.
- Wrong information: Most Corps members might not receive any allowance, despite serving in a potentially paying state, due to the submission of wrong documents. It nullifies the payment of the state allowance of such corps members; therefore, it is essential to take caution while submitting your documents at the NYSC secretariat.
So kindly take note to avoid any unnecessary mistakes. With all said and done, the above states listed are the states known for providing some form of stipend to corps members to aid them during their service year. Thank you for reading this article.
