Will Wrong Date Of Birth Affect My Admission?

by EDUFEED BRAINS

There are some cases whereby some students make a mistake by filling in a wrong date of birth while doing their NIN or O’Level exam (WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB) registration. Some even go as far as filling a wrong DOB in their birth certificate.

Most students, after making this mistake in their DOB, get curious to know if it will affect their admission in any way. And when affected students throw the question “Will the wrong date of birth affect my admission?” to the public, they get several opinions, with most answers being wrong, which will only add to their frustration.

Well, to prevent affected candidates from getting more frustrated due to the mistake in DOB and wrong information from their peers, I decided to come up with this article that will be telling you if the wrong DOB in your NIN, O’Level certificate, or birth certificate will actually affect your admission.

So without wasting much time, let’s proceed!

Will Wrong Date Of Birth Affect My Admission?

The answer to this question is NO. If there is a wrong date of birth in your NIN, O’Level results, or birth certificate, it won’t affect your admission; this simply means it can’t stop you from getting admission.

I have seen several students who made a mistake in their date of birth end up getting admission, so yours shouldn’t be affected. But that doesn’t mean you won’t get affected later on. Below are the possible ways you might get affected due to a date of birth error in your NIN, O’Level certificate, or birth certificate.

  • Clearance

After getting admission, you must do your physical or online clearance, and without being cleared, you might not be able to proceed with other necessary registration. And before you can be cleared, all the details in the document you provided must match.

This simply means a mistake in your DOB in your NIN, O’Level results, or birth certificate will stop you from being cleared since it will be contradicting your details in the other documents you will be providing.

  • NYSC

When there is a mistake in the date of birth in your document, especially in your NIN, you will also get affected during your NYSC registration. This is because NYSC will take your details from your JAMB profile, and any details on your NIN will be what will reflect in your profile.

And all the details on your JAMB profile must correspond with the documents you will be asked to provide. This simply means with the mistake you made in your DOB, you won’t be allowed to proceed any further.

What’s The Best Advice?

If you found out that there was a date of birth error in your NIN, O’Level results, or birth certificate, below is the best advice for you.

  1. If the error is from your NIN, it’s best you visit any NIMC office close to you to correct the error before your school admission process starts. And if you notice the error after you have gained admission, make sure to correct the error before proceeding to do your physical or online clearance.
  2. If the error is from your O’level results, especially WAEC, which doesn’t allow changing its details anymore after registration, and your school admission process hasn’t started, it’s best to get an affidavit from a court. And if you notice the error after gaining admission, still proceed to get the affidavit before doing your physical or online clearance.
  3. If the error is from your birth certificate and your school hasn’t started their admission process, just visit any local government office to get a new birth certificate. If this error was also noticed after you have gained admission, still proceed to the local government where you can get a new birth certificate before thinking of doing your physical or online clearance.

So in essence, a wrong date of birth in your O’Level results, NIN, or birth certificate will not affect your admission, but it might affect you during your clearance or NYSC registration. And after noticing the error, it is best to correct it before your school admission process starts or before you do your clearance.

Thank you for your response. Just like the article explained, you cannot change such data after registration. You will have to wait till next year and do the necessary things before such change can reflect.

Date of birth on my waec certificate is different from my normal date of birth, so when uploading the result on jamb website will it affect me getting admission cos I registered with my correct date of birth during jamb registration and my other documents like NiN, birth certificate have my correct date date of birth and am going to still input my correct date of birth during post Utme registration will it affect me gaining admission this year.

Thank you for your response. How do you mean your real date of birth? Do you mean the wrong date of birth? If it’s the wrong date of birth, you can easily correct it using your WAEC on your NYSC portal. We will be waiting for your response.

I had a wrong date if birth on my NIN the first time I wrote jamb ,2024. I did change of date of birth on NIN , it has changed successful. I also did change of date of birth on my jamb portal. it did not reflect on the jamb print out yet . During my post utme registration the right date of birth reflected there. I wasn’t given admission Las year . This year I went to register jamb while creating my profile code with my NIN it still gave me the same profile code of last year . I used for my jamb registration yesterday. After the whole application for jamb was successful the print out came out with the wrong date of birth even after I have change the date of birth on my NIN which was successful. Pls I need solutions.

Thank you for your response. I think you did a mistake by proceeding to register because now nothing can be done. Once you correct any error on your NIN, you are to send REQUERY to JAMB before proceeding to register in which at the point of registration you will be given the opportunity to correct the error on your JAMB profile.

If you had done this, your printout would have showed the correct DOB not the wrong one.

Thank you for your response. It will affect you especially of the wrong DOB doesn’t align with your other legal documents like birth certificate and more.

Although it might not stop you from getting admission, but will affect you when the time for NYSC comes. Our advice for you is, since DOB is not correctable after registration for JAMB, just wait till next year.

But before you register, make sure you correct the error from your NIN and send REQUERY to JAMB before registering. This way, the DOB on your JAMB portal will change to the correct one and you won’t have problem later on in the future. We hope this helps you.
