There are some cases whereby some students make a mistake by filling in a wrong date of birth while doing their NIN or O’Level exam (WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB) registration. Some even go as far as filling a wrong DOB in their birth certificate.
Most students, after making this mistake in their DOB, get curious to know if it will affect their admission in any way. And when affected students throw the question “Will the wrong date of birth affect my admission?” to the public, they get several opinions, with most answers being wrong, which will only add to their frustration.
Well, to prevent affected candidates from getting more frustrated due to the mistake in DOB and wrong information from their peers, I decided to come up with this article that will be telling you if the wrong DOB in your NIN, O’Level certificate, or birth certificate will actually affect your admission.
So without wasting much time, let’s proceed!
Will Wrong Date Of Birth Affect My Admission?
The answer to this question is NO. If there is a wrong date of birth in your NIN, O’Level results, or birth certificate, it won’t affect your admission; this simply means it can’t stop you from getting admission.
I have seen several students who made a mistake in their date of birth end up getting admission, so yours shouldn’t be affected. But that doesn’t mean you won’t get affected later on. Below are the possible ways you might get affected due to a date of birth error in your NIN, O’Level certificate, or birth certificate.

Book Your Consultation Now- Clearance
After getting admission, you must do your physical or online clearance, and without being cleared, you might not be able to proceed with other necessary registration. And before you can be cleared, all the details in the document you provided must match.
This simply means a mistake in your DOB in your NIN, O’Level results, or birth certificate will stop you from being cleared since it will be contradicting your details in the other documents you will be providing.
- NYSC
When there is a mistake in the date of birth in your document, especially in your NIN, you will also get affected during your NYSC registration. This is because NYSC will take your details from your JAMB profile, and any details on your NIN will be what will reflect in your profile.
And all the details on your JAMB profile must correspond with the documents you will be asked to provide. This simply means with the mistake you made in your DOB, you won’t be allowed to proceed any further.
What’s The Best Advice?
If you found out that there was a date of birth error in your NIN, O’Level results, or birth certificate, below is the best advice for you.
- If the error is from your NIN, it’s best you visit any NIMC office close to you to correct the error before your school admission process starts. And if you notice the error after you have gained admission, make sure to correct the error before proceeding to do your physical or online clearance.
- If the error is from your O’level results, especially WAEC, which doesn’t allow changing its details anymore after registration, and your school admission process hasn’t started, it’s best to get an affidavit from a court. And if you notice the error after gaining admission, still proceed to get the affidavit before doing your physical or online clearance.
- If the error is from your birth certificate and your school hasn’t started their admission process, just visit any local government office to get a new birth certificate. If this error was also noticed after you have gained admission, still proceed to the local government where you can get a new birth certificate before thinking of doing your physical or online clearance.
So in essence, a wrong date of birth in your O’Level results, NIN, or birth certificate will not affect your admission, but it might affect you during your clearance or NYSC registration. And after noticing the error, it is best to correct it before your school admission process starts or before you do your clearance.
