One of the most recently asked questions by prospective corp members (PCMs) is the question of “Will I Go For NYSC After School Of Nursing?”. We all know that those who studied nursing at a university are definitely eligible for NYSC, but is it the same for those who attended a school of nursing?
The excitement of participating in the National Youth Service Corps program remains the topmost priority of each and every Nigerian youth after completing their academic sessions, and the fact that not everyone will go to the university to study nursing is understandable.
But before you think of pursuing your nursing career in an alternative institution, specifically a school of nursing, it’s mandatory to know if you will be eligible for service after completing your years of study because the NYSC certificate is an important document that almost all graduates need to have.
In this article, we look forward to analysing and answering the question, “Will I go for NYSC after school or nursing?” to your satisfaction. By the end of this article, after providing an answer to this question, you will know the next step to take and also know if you are on the right track in your nursing career. I will start by giving you a brief overview of what the NYSC scheme is all about.
The NYSC Scheme
The NYSC scheme is a compulsory one-year service for individuals below the age of 30 (above 30, you’ll be asked to print out your exemption letter). It is basically for graduates with degrees such as BSc or HND across Nigeria.
The NYSC act on the eligibility to serve in Nigeria (on degree acquisition) states that “You must be a Nigerian graduate from either a university, polytechnic, or any institution that gives either a BSc or HND degree.”.

Book Your Consultation NowA university will definitely give you a BSc degree after graduating, while a polytechnic will give you an HND after graduating, which makes a university or polytechnic graduate eligible for NYSC, but is that the same for the school of nursing? Let’s find out below.
Will I Go for NYSC After School of Nursing?
The straight answer to this question is YES, meaning you can go for NYSC after school of nursing. Now why do I say so? In the university, one is being awarded a degree in nursing (BNSC), while in a school of nursing, one is being awarded with an RN and HND.
This simply means that schools of nursing usually award their students with the HND degree in nursing, which makes them eligible for service just like I explained earlier in the NYSC scheme.
So in conclusion, you can freely proceed with the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) registration after completing your study at any accredited school of nursing institution in Nigeria.
Additionally, in my own opinion, I will suggest you study hard so as to get enrolled into the university directly to study nursing. Nurses who graduate from universities in Nigeria are considered senior nurses (no matter their years of experience). But that doesn’t mean the School of Nursing is bad, so don’t get me wrong; it’s just an opinion.
