While registering for JAMB, you will be given the option to select your mode of admission, which can either be UTME or Direct Entry (DE). If you pick UTME, it means you are applying for admission into first year (100 level), while if you pick DE, it means you are applying for admission into second year (200 level).
In the long run, some candidates who registered for JAMB might want to switch their mode of admission from UTME to Direct Entry due to one reason or another. To achieve this, such a candidate will have to do what we call JAMB UTME to DE conversion.
This conversion is simply the process of changing your mode of admission from UTME to Direct Entry (DE). It gives candidates who initially picked UTME the opportunity to still do Direct Entry (DE). Candidates who have successfully converted from UTME to Direct Entry are called “Conversation Candidates.”.

The commencement date for the 2025/2025 JAMB UTME to Direct Entry conversion hasn’t been announced yet. Though it usually starts around August, but JAMB hasn’t announced anything concerning it for this year yet.
But let’s imagine conversion has commenced already and you have done yours successfully; there are two things you need to know.
- You need to know what happens after conversion.
- You need to know what to do after conversion.
As always, we’ve got you covered, so I will be telling you everything.
1 What Happens After Conversion?
Basically, there are two things that will happen after conversion. They include;
- Your Registration Number Will Change
After conversion, your registration number will change. Usually, the letter “U” will be added at the end of the registration number.
- There Will Be Changes On Your JAMB Caps
You will also notice other little changes on your JAMB caps after conversion. One of those changes is the appearance of the “NIPED Status,” which was not there until you converted.
- It Will Reflect On Your School Portal
After conversion, it will also reflect on your school portal. Though it usually takes time but it’s expected to reflect on your school portal before their post-UTME registration ends. When it has reflected, you will be able to access their portal and also register for their post-UTME.
2 What To Do After Conversion?
There are some certain things you need to do after successfully converting from UTME to Direct Entry (DE).
- Submitting Your Slip to Your Institution
Most institutions usually ask their direct entry applicants to submit their DE slip at some point. So after successfully converting from UTME to Direct Entry, kindly do your own research to know if your school requires their DE applicants to submit their DE slip. If they request it, kindly visit your school to submit yours or follow the process stated by them.
- Register for Your School Direct Entry Screening
All institutions usually conduct a screening exercise, which is mostly online, for their DE applicants. Unlike UTME applicants that do post-UTME exams, direct entry applicants will be doing screening only. So after conversion, make sure you watch out for when your school will open their portal for direct entry screening so you can register because without participating in this screening, you are automatically not eligible for admission.
Can I Do JAMB UTME To Direct Entry In A Cafe?
NO, you can’t do a conversion from UTME to Direct Entry at a cyber cafe. Only JAMB offices are authorised to assist students in doing this conversion.
Can I Do a Conversion From UTME To Direct Entry Without Writing The Exam?
NO, you can’t do a conversion from UTME to DE without sitting for the exam. As stated earlier, one of the eligibility criteria for this conversion is that you must have written the UTME for this year.
Will I Still Be Offered Admission Through UTME After Conversion to Direct Entry?
NO, you won’t. Candidates can only pick one mode of admission, which can either be through UTME or Direct Entry (DE), and conversion from UTME to DE doesn’t mean you will still be offered admission through UTME. Once you have converted, your full focus will be on the DE mode of admission, as you don’t have any business with UTME again.
Can I Switch Back to UTME After Doing Conversion?
NO, you can’t switch back to UTME after conversion from UTME to Direct Entry (DE). So if you have successfully converted, your new mode of admission is Direct Entry, and there is no turning back.
Can I Use Awaiting Results for Conversion?
NO, you cannot use awaiting results for conversion. Before you can be able to convert from UTME to DE, all your important documents as stated above must be readily available, including your results, because without them, you won’t be allowed to proceed.
Conclusion
In conclusion, conversion is just a way of switching your mode of admission, and this can be done by visiting any JAMB office close to you with the required documents.
